Mafia don Frank Cali’s killing is a reminder the mob is alive. Just not as flashy

(CNN)Cigar-chomping Mafia bosses in dapper suits once dominated perceptions of organized crime in the United States. While the dons are less flamboyant now and shun the spotlight, their work continues in the shadows, experts say. The last time a Mafia boss was assassinated in the city was 34 years ago, when former Gambino don Paul Castellano was shot dead as he arrived at a popular steakhouse in midtown Manhattan, a hit ordered by the so-called “Dapper Don” himself, John J. Gotti. CNN legal analyst James Gagliano said Cali’s killing reminded him of his work with the FBI’s Gambino crime squad in New York City in the 1990s. “Scenes like this were somewhat commonplace during the mob wars,” he tweeted. “Guarantee …

Study Finds Evidence For A New Human Sense

Some humans may have an unconscious ability to sense Earth’s magnetic field, according to a provocative new study published today in the journal eNeuro. Years of exciting but often inconclusive experiments have led such research to fade in popularity. Now, a veteran in the field is hoping to revive interest with some of the strongest evidence yet that humans may have a magnetic sense buried deep within the brain.  It is well known many creatures, from frogs to lobsters, can sense Earth’s magnetic field, while others also rely on it for navigation (think: butterflies and sea turtles).  Caltech geoscientist Joseph Kirschvink and neuroscientist Shin Shimojo decided to revisit the issue, this time with a rather sophisticated study design. For the experiment, 34 …

(CNN)“I sometimes dream in Spanish,” wrote Bakir Brown. “I was first introduced and fell in love with the language by watching ‘Sesame Street.’ I just loved how the words just literally rolled off the tongue. It was beautiful. I still remember (how) the skit from so long ago taught me my first Spanish words, “abierto” and “cerrado” — “open” and “closed.” Bakir Brown, Richmond, Virginia The melting pot exists only on the surface I came here from Italy in 1991, and besides a few vacation trips and one nine months’ stretch in 2007, I have been living in Central Texas for the last 28 years. Zuckerberg wants Facebook to build a creepy mind-reading machine

Good enough to eat? The toxic truth about modern food

We are now producing and consuming more food than ever, and yet our modern diet is killing us. How can we solve this bittersweet dilemma? Pick a bunch of green grapes, wash it, and put one in your mouth. Feel the grape with your tongue, observe how cold and refreshing it is: the crisp flesh, and the jellylike interior with its mild, sweet flavour. Eating grapes can feel like an old pleasure, untouched by change. The ancient Greeks and Romans loved to eat them, as well as to drink them in the form of wine. The Odyssey describes a ripe and luscious vine, hung thick with grapes. As you pull the next delicious piece of fruit from its stalk, you …

Astronomers Discover 83 New Supermassive Black Holes In The Early Universe

An international team of astronomers has discovered 83 new quasars from a time when the universe was just a tenth of the age it is today. Quasars – the bright centers of galaxies – are powered by extremely active supermassive black holes and this discovery gives us precious insights into the first billion years of the cosmos. The findings are reported in five different papers, which detail the properties of the objects. The researchers revealed that the region they observed contains 100 quasars from the early universe, 17 of which we already knew about. They estimate that on average, the spacing between the supermassive black holes is about a billion light-years. Among their discoveries, the team has found the second furthest quasar to date. …

Tucker Carlson, under fire for past radio comments, blames the Left

They are using words he uttered on a shock-jock radio show as long as 13 years ago, even though for part of that time he worked as an MSNBC host. The effort is led by a liberal advocacy organization that has been crusading against Fox News for years. There is a push to get advertisers to boycott his prime-time show in an effort to force him off the air. These things are also true about Tucker Carlson: Some of the things he said on the radio show are offensive, troubling and can’t be defended. His characterizations, especially of women and Muslims, were totally unacceptable. Yes, he seemingly made the comments in jocular banter long ago, but in today’s Twitter-driven environment, …
